Bonding Activities to do at Home

18th March 2020

Times of isolation – even when self-imposed – can be hard. Despite being near your loved ones, you may find yourself feeling lonelier than ever. Many of us, in times of stress, turn inward, not talking openly about how we’re feeling or engaging in activities that make us feel better and strengthen social bonds with people we love.

Bearded man drinks coffee with a woman wearing a scarf. A pug looks on.

There are easy ways to get that socialization and bonding time back, giving our mood and wellbeing a much-needed boost.

All it takes are a few simple ideas on how to make your home a fun haven of creativity. Here are our suggestions:

Create a Home-Date

Whether you’re planning this for your partner, you and a child, or everyone, why not plan a home-date night? Set up a room in the house as your “date destination”, putting out a nice tablecloth or rug, brew up a pot of great coffee like Twochimpscoffee.com or your own favorite brand, some nice pastries or snacks (if you’re feeling really crafty, why not bake up something from scratch?), and sit down with your loved ones for delicious beverages and fun conversation.

Perk things up even more by playing some classical music or something everyone enjoys like bringing out a coffee table book to peruse together. You could  even try a fun shared activity like MadLibs or story prompts.

If you’re looking for something more romantic for yourself and a partner, why not a nice dinner, complete with candlelight, wine and dancing, right in your own dining room?

Play Games

How many of us have shelf after shelf of board games, card games and other family activities that just sit there collecting dust year after year? Well, now is their moment. It’s time to bust out the Monopoly, Clue and ancient set of dominoes and get to playing!

Up the stakes by playing for the last chocolate bar in the candy bowl or for a certificate for a back rub or no-chores day! You can even create your own trivia games and more with just pencil and paper. Video game tournaments, puzzles and outdoor games like horseshoes are all great ideas.

Deep Clean

You can turn cleaning into a fun bonding activity if you know how to do it. Create a competition among the members of your household to see who can purge the most unwanted stuff, or who can deep clean the bathroom fastest (and most efficiently). Offer prizes and incentives.

Better yet: why not rearrange a room? Sometimes just moving a few couches can change the look of a place and totally change your mindset, making you feel as if you’ve entered a whole new space. It’s just a neat little trick for those who might be feeling a little too isolated and need a change of scenery. It really works!

And there you have it: a few tried-and-true bonding activities for those who are stuck at home, fun ways to bond with your family and get through the tough stuff together.
