Children can be reluctant to get active, especially when they have the option to sit in front of a screen. It’s not always that they don’t like exercise, although some don’t, but that it’s a lot easier to not do it. Encouraging your kids to be more active is often frustrating and it can be really hard to get through to them. But it’s also important to make physical activity a normal part of their lives that they can take into adulthood. Making exercise fun is key, and there are some great ways you can bring fun and excitement into physical activity for children.

Explore Different Activities
Finding the right activity is crucial if you want your children to enjoy exercising. Forcing them into something they don’t really want to do definitely isn’t going to help them find exercise fun. So exploring a range of different activities is a good way to find something they can enjoy. Instead of just looking at the standard options of football or swimming, try to find some more unusual activities that might interest them too. There could be something that you haven’t considered before that they find to be really fun.
Give Them Active Toys
Lots of toys are great for encouraging exercise, even if they’re not directly related to sports. Things like balls and bats can obviously help to build skills for sports like football or cricket, but some toys are just great fun to play with. Items like skipping ropes or hula hoops can get kids exercising without them even realising that’s what they’re doing. And while a lot of these toys are best when kept outside, they can sometimes be inside toys if they’re used carefully too. Having ways to be active on a rainy day is always useful as well.

Get Them on Wheels
You have several ways your kids can get exercise on wheels. A bike is the obvious option, but you also have scooters, skateboards, and skates. Not only are these great for encouraging exercise, but they can be used to get around too. If you’re looking to buy something like this, try waiting for sales. You could get a great deal on Black Friday stunt scooters or a new bike if you look for discounted prices. Buying second hand can also be an option if you want to avoid spending too much, especially if it’s something your child can grow out of.
Make Exercise the Secondary Activity
Exercise doesn’t always have to be the primary goal of whatever your child is doing. If they’re reluctant to join in with sports or are averse to all kinds of exercise, try to make it more of a secondary activity. They can do something else they enjoy that just happens to get them moving at the same time. This could be anything from doing a nature scavenger hunt, which should get them walking or running, to just playing around in the garden.
Make exercising more fun and you could find it’s easier to encourage your kids to be active.
