Keeping Your Sanity When You Can’t Leave The House

23rd April 2020

When governments first announced the lockdown in response to the coronavirus, one of the main concerns was people’s mental health. There would be a lot of individuals out there who could struggle if asked to isolate themselves for months at a time. As social creatures, we find it difficult to spend long periods alone. It’s a tough ask for anyone with mental health difficulties.

There’s a need, therefore, for a set of robust strategies to help people stay healthy and keep well clear of COVID-19 as it works its way through the population. But what can we do at home to maintain a healthy mindset?

Use Video Chat Apps To Stay In Touch

If this crisis had happened twenty years ago, we would likely be in a much worse position. We couldn’t have had facetime with people over the internet. It just wasn’t technologically possible. Now, though, we can feel as if we’ve had a face-to-face conversation through our computers and phones, and that makes a big difference. Looking at another person can allow us to feel as though we’re having a real conversation, not just texting some random bot.

Create A Meditation Schedule

Meditation is one of the most powerful tools available for promoting mental health. The idea is to clear the mind of negative ruminations and focus on just “being.” For many people, it can be a revelation. It neutralizes the thoughts that cause distress, and its effects can last all day. After a bit of practice, it puts you in a fundamentally different brain state, and you can wind up feeling so much better, even while cooped up in your home.

Prepare Yourself For Bad News

The coronavirus is the biggest shock to hit humanity since WWII. It dominates the news cycle and affects us all.

For people with a history of trauma, this can be particularly overwhelming. You want stability, but that is the opposite of what is going on in the media and the world outside. It’s understandably distressing.

Preparing yourself for bad news, therefore, is a vital part of getting through this crisis. Things will probably continue to be bad in the news for quite some time. It is essential to be aware of the negative feelings that you will experience and accept them and be ready for them if possible.

Create A New Schedule

For many of us, the daily routine is a lifeline. It is something that gives our days structure and helps us to navigate them more effectively. It’s an anchor.

The pandemic, however, has mostly put a stop to what we would usually do, and that can disrupt your mental processes. A lot of people, therefore, are now creating new schedules – even those with no history of mental health issues. Routines give structure to the day, help to keep you productive, and provide a source of focus.

The lockdown is tough for everyone, but especially people with anxiety and depression. There are, however, strategies that you can use to fortify yourself against these challenges. It could be an opportunity to take stock and find new coping strategies.
