Can You Get More Involved At Your Kid’s School?

21st December 2022

A good education is a lot more likely when both the school and the parent are invested in the success of their child, at school. This goes beyond just helping your child succeed by ensuring they study and take school seriously, of course. You should also think about how you can help your school provide the education and services that it’s supposed to. Here, we’re going to look at a few instances of how you can do that.

Join parent-teacher organisations

If there is a parent-teacher organisation, even if it’s a more informal weekly meeting or the like, at your child’s school, then it’s a very good idea to get involved. Also known as a parent-teacher association, this is where you can meet with members of the school’s faculty and administration team alongside other parents and talk about matters of how the school is run. Even if you can’t attend directly, you can ask for minutes of the meetings.

Attend school events

The school will run all manner of events, but a lot of parents only attend the big ones, such as orientation events and parent-teacher meetings. Attending school events, including those that your child isn’t a part of, can help you be a more integral part of the school community. This means that you’re a lot more likely to get included by the school.

Volunteer to help

There are a lot of schools that will look for parents to volunteer and contribute to certain aspects. This could be helping to run school events, lending expertise for initiatives, or even taking your time to help raise funds at the school. By volunteering to help, you can ensure that your school is getting the assistance that it needs and also build closer relationships with the school staff which, again, can benefit your child greatly.

Help with trips

One of the most organisationally challenging parts of the school calendar year is the trips that the school is expected to take their kids on. While parents can’t exactly run the trips for the school, they might be willing to accept your help in organising residential trips for schools . This might even just include being a chaperone to increase the number of adults compared to children, offering a purely practical hand to those who are in charge of the trip.

Be vocal about your needs

An important part of being a parent who is involved in the life and education of their child is knowing how to vouch for your child’s needs successfully. Take the time to think about what, exactly, you want the school to do and what might currently be lacking. Work with teachers, find out how they best prefer to be contacted and don’t be shy about talking to other parents about needs that you might be better able to collectively fulfil.

Being an involved parent not only helps to improve the quality of the school your child attends, but also helps you get to know the teachers, too, which brings benefits of its own.
