I was absolutely thrilled to be invited to review YOU BRAND – A Manual for Confidence by Julia Goodman. Here’s a bit more detail about the book and the author, which will be followed by my review.

The book
A Manual for Confidence will help you develop your unique voice and you self-belief as a communicator, by uniting head, heart and body. Rooted in the psychology and techniques of the professional theatre, the You Brand method will teach you the craft of ‘performing yourself’ – wherever you are.
The author
Julia Goodman set up Personal Presentation Ltd in 1989 after a European tour playing Lady Macbeth. She had the idea while lying in the bath , contemplating how to keep her head above water in a major recession as a divorced single mother of two children. She was surviving – when not working – on £90 a week social security. Within three years PPL had become a world leader in communication coaching.

My review
Sounds good, doesn’t it? If you are thinking “well THAT sounds right up Daisy’s street!”, you would be absolutely right. From the gorgeous ombre cover in beautiful pastel shades, to the cartoonesque illustrations, and the pages of really solid advice contained within, this book is a perfect toolbox of tips and tricks to boost the confidence.
The book arrived with a letter from Julia Goodman herself, advising me to read the book in its entirety before embarking on any of the exercises and then to go back and work through any of those that had particularly resonated with me. I’ll be honest there were quite a few and there are yet more that I want to work through.
Whatever your station in life, whether you have a job or you don’t, whether you work for someone else or you have your own business – there will be something for you. The advice and exercises are in my opinion, transferrable skills. For example, you may not be having to give a presentation to a large audience over Zoom, but you may well have to attend your first Parent’s Evening at a new school and the feelings of dread and overwhelm are universal.
YOU BRAND is relevant and helpful. It doesn’t preach or impose. There are energy exercises, breathing exercises – all manner of tools to boost confidence levels and after the year we have had, can any one of us say we woudn’t appreciate a little help in that regard?
I was reading earlier today that extended periods of lockdown and isolation have left a lot of people with anxiety and stress about going “back to normal”. I see lots of people on Twitter saying they have forgotten how to communicate – possibly exaggerated for the sake of humour, but I think it is a real problem and this book is a real solution.
5/5 – the whole aesthetic of this book is really appealling – the ombre cover (which feels as good as it looks) is extended to the pages inside, highlighting certain passages and exercises. It’s a book I know I will return to gain and again. I would highly recommend everyone to grab themselves a copy.
