The Good Husband by Abigail Osborne #BookReview

2nd August 2022

#AD #Gifted

I am beyond excited to be bringing you my review of The Good Husband, the latest book by one of my favourite authors, Abigail Osborne.

Scroll down for the story synopsis, some information about the author and then you’ll find my thoughts are the end.

Are you sitting comfortably? Good. You won’t be for long, trust me on that.

The book

A zealot sends his grief-stricken son on a murderous mission, in this heart-pounding novel.

A chaotic stampede of Black Friday shoppers leads to Elsie’s tragic death—and leaves Jack, her husband of thirty-seven years, devastated. Unable to cope with his grief, he flees to his childhood home to be with his father, an overbearing religious zealot who puts his faith before everything—even his son.

Jack’s father convinces him that Elsie had not died in vain. Her life was sacrificed to give Jack the strength he needs for his mission: to rid the world of greed. Embittered by his loss, Jack soon sets out to punish the depraved and eradicate the sinners from the world. The greedy killed his wife, and now they must pay. But how far is Jack willing to go to fulfil God’s plan—and how many innocent people will die?

The author

Abigail Osborne, originally from the Lake District, lives in Worcester with her husband and assorted animals, including her beloved Cockerpoo, Ozzy. Like many writers, she is an avid reader and also enjoys spending time playing board games, of which she has a massive collection.

Abigail plays the violin and the piano and bizarrely, doesn’t like cheese. Who on earth doesn’t like cheese?

If you are lucky enough to become friends with her, be prepared to be press ganged into watching The Gilmore Girls frequently and for amazing meals out where you will laugh yourself silly. Also if she asks you to help her with research for her next book … run. Especially if she is equipped with rope or mentions the word “worms”.

My review

Where to start with this book? I don’t know that there is a WOW big enough. Honestly, I could NOT put it down, I was totally absorbed from the get go. The characters are all so well written – partway through they were starting to feel like people I actually knew. And in most cases, people I didn’t want to know and yet I was so invested in what happened to each and every one of them.

The book swings between the past and the present, proving the saying that says life must be lived going forwards but can ony be understood looking backwards.

I am going to tread very carefully in this review as I don’t want to give away any spoilers. The book will keep you second guessing the whole way through, there are so many twists and turns. Abigail takes her readers on a journey, a really memorable one and doesn’t even allow them a moment to process what they have just read. The writing is rich and descriptive and the tension is real. It builds and it grows until you realise that you’re holding your breath and clenching your jaw and your fingernails are digging hard into your palms. It’s magical, in the worst possible spine tingling way. I LOVED IT.

This story is terrifying and horrifying and cracks open the whole heart and soul of human emotions. It will make you experience a whole smorgasbord of feelings and will leave you both shaken and stirred.

The Good Husband is Abigail’s third book; her writing has developed and grown so much since the last book, Save Her and her first book, The Puppet Master – both of which I thoroughly enjoyed. But this? This is a whole other level. Either of those first two books would be hailed as a successful, well written psychological thriller. The Good Husband is head and shoulders above either of them.

5/5 stars and if I could give it more, I definitely would. I just want to scream “READ THIS BOOK” in everyone’s face.
