Benevolent – the book
A story about the purpose of life, the healing power of fandom, and the resilience of the human spirit.
Tormented by the in-crowd at school on a daily basis, there were two things that gave fifteen-year-old Abigail Perkins the strength to keep going—her best friend, Danny Cobb; and her favorite television show, Supernatural. But the night Danny’s mother calls to say that his battle with cancer is nearing its end, and the doctors don’t expect him to live through the night, even Supernatural can’t dull the ache in her heart.
Devastated by her impending loss and crushed that Danny’s mother won’t allow her to visit him one last time, Abigail crawls into bed and cries herself to sleep that night; and she wakes to find Supernatural’s most endearing angel standing at the foot of her bed.
Told from Abigail’s perspective as she nears the end of her long life and revisits the moments that defined it, this story was inspired by the deep connection that Supernatural fans feel with the show’s beloved characters, and the show’s miraculous ability to help its fans through troubled times.

Benevolent – the review
My goodness, this book is a tear-jerker.
That isn’t a bad thing by the way! I’m not familiar with the TV show Supernatural, so the characters and storylines of the show were all new to me, but I that didn’t detract from the story at all. Obviously members of the Supernatural fandom will adore this book, but membership isn’t a nesessary requirement.
Erin A. Jensen writes with such eloquence and feeling. There are so many moments that resonate as Abigail leads you through her life story. I wasn’t sure what to expect at all, but I was drawn in from the first chapter and the story doesn’t disappoint, it keeps you in an emotional headlock until the very last page.
One neat little touch, is a playlist that accompanies the book. It forms part of the story and is available on Erin’s website. There is a song for every chapter and the music flows along with the story – again, not essential to the enjoyment of the book, but a lovely extra.
A beautiful read, one that will stay with me for a long time. The proceeds are all going to a very worthwhile charitable cause as well, so I am happy to have contributed by purchasing this book. I am a massive fan of random acts of kindness. Grab yourself a copy here (affiliate link).
5/5 – highly recommended.
