You Know We Used To Have Mad Makeup Love, But Now We’ve Only Got Bad Blood (And Skin)

You Know We Used To Have Mad Makeup Love, But Now We’ve Only Got Bad Blood (And Skin)

Makeup is the easiest way to boost your confidence and make yourself feel like you’re at least halfway ready to deal with the day. Busy mums, especially, relish this chance to take at least a little pamper time away from the kiddies.

Sadly, what goes up must come down, and many mums/makeup wearers alike find that their love for a beauty regime can sometimes have detrimental effects. Most notably, many a keen makeup wearer may notice a buildup of spots after so many days of heavy coverage.

As simple as that, your go-to feel-good beauty plan becomes the very thing that’s making you insecure. It’s not a good feeling, and it’s a problem you can probably overcome by making sure to avoid the following mistakes as you move forward.

# 1 – Failing to clean your face first

The best artists need a clean canvas from which to build a masterpiece, and makeup is no different. Still, many of us fail even to consider the state of our skin before we begin application. What does it matter if we’re only going to cover up, after all?

Actually, it matters quite a lot given then layers of makeup on top of greasy or clogged pores are always going to lead to muck buildup. Worse, this overlay will push dirt, etc. even deeper into your creases, making spots, dry skin, and other such breakouts inevitable.

Starting your beauty regime with a wash could, therefore, make a huge difference. If your failure here has already done damage, then take this chance, too, to apply any treatments that can  clear things up. Zineryt is an acne treatment that could lay the ideal foundation while treating spots at their root, while skincare products like micellar water or exfoliating scrubs can each take care of your skin so that it’s in the best possible health when you do get to the makeup part of your routine.

# 2 – Finger application

If you don’t have much time to dedicate to makeup, then you may well fall foul to finger application. It’s fast, efficient, and it’s always served you well, hasn’t it? Perhaps on the surface, but applying makeup with your fingers is another sure way to wreak havoc with your skin.

Your fingers are breeding grounds for dirt, bacteria, and oil, especially when you’ve got kids in the house. Washing your hands ahead of time can, admittedly, help somewhat, but there’s still no guarantee you’ll remove all that mucky debris. Just like that, you’ll rub all the good (or not) stuff over your skin along with that makeup. Suddenly, you’ll be dealing with spots, rashes, and dry patches galore! As such, experts always recommend that you use brushes for application. While some finger blending may still be necessary, this can largely reduce your need to make face-to-finger contact.

Do bear in mind, though, that dirty brushes can be just as bad. According to PEEK Beauty founder and celeb makeup artist Cristina Bartolucci, treating the hair on your brushes like the hair on your head is the only way to avoid issues. In other words, you should aim to wash and condition bristles at least once a week to prevent bacteria build ups.

# 3 – A bad makeup match

Sometimes, makeup-based breakouts are to do with little more than a poor makeup match. Nowadays, the majority of products are designed with particular skin-types in mind and making sure that you understand your skin, or ask a beauty expert to do so for you, is fundamental. Otherwise, you could find yourself using a dry-skin product with added oils on top of an already oily base. And guess what? Spots can often come about as a result.

Even once you’ve got skin-type in the bag, it’s worth noting that not all products are the best from a skincare perspective. While the majority of brands are leaning towards more natural solutions these days, there are still plenty of top-selling makeup products that rely on alcohol, fragrances, dyes, and even acrylics. These are pretty heavy chemicals, and any one of them could see your skin breaking out rather than looking beautiful, as is your goal.

Make sure, then, that you’re always checking those ingredients (as well as skin types) before you buy. For the most part, it pays to look out for products labelled either ‘oil-free’ or “non-comedogenic” for a makeup collection you can trust.

# 4 – Too much of a good thing

In some cases, makeup-related breakouts are simply a case of too much of a good thing. Most notably, this applies to individuals who slather on excesses of foundation, often to cover breakouts in the first place. It doesn’t take a genius, after all, to work out that a dense layer of foundation is going to leave your skin struggling to breathe. That’s terrible news in a general sense, but can be especially damaging for worsening existing spots and leading to further setbacks in their clearance. Instead, experts recommend just a thin layer of foundation, with especially light application around the eyes, nose, and forehead.

Equally, recommendations go against wearing makeup every single day. It may make you feel at your best, but ongoing makeup usage means that your skin will get barely any time to breathe. Inevitably, flare-ups will arise as a result.

If at all possible, this is reason enough to go without makeup at least one day a week. If you can’t bear that much, then at least aim to remove your makeup the moment you get home so that your skin can recover fully before the next beauty barrage!

A final word

Makeup is a fantastic thing, and the confidence it can bring is next to none. Still, those plus points can soon become negatives if you don’t consider the ways your current habits are harming your skin health. So, take these pointers on board and implement them wherever possible for a beauty regime you can fall in love with all over again.
